After working at Pacific Bell for nearly 20 years as a Senior Engineer, he started Conway Engineering in Oakland, a highly successful engineering firm. After 14 years he retired and moved to Napa due to ill health, Retirement did not suit Gary, so he started another highly successful engineering and manufacturing firm, Merge Technologies Group, Inc. in Napa,
Gary loved life on the Napa River and was an avid yachtsman. He also enjoyed classical music, fine wine, traveling, computers, and photography. Gary was also a ham radio operator, call sign K6MGU. He was a member of the Spinnaker Yacht Club, NARTE, Roadrunners, Independent Telephone Pioneers of America, as well as several other professional organizations. He held at least 12 patents and was awarded the Who's Who of Entrepreneurs of America several times.
Gary was a philanthropic person who donated to many needy organizations throughout the country.
He is survived by four children, Mark Fields of Valencia; Walter B. Fields of Dublin, Marie Mariolle of San Ramon, and Nancy Young of Danville as well as his loving companion Joan Salazar and her daughter An-drea Salazar of Napa. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn Garrett of Napa and Richard Fields of Sparks, NV, as well as
10 grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend a rosary at Fowler-Anderson, 2244 Santa Clara Ave.. Alameda on June 10 from 1 to 8 p.m. A requiem mass will be held at St. Barnabas Church, 1427 6th Street. Alameda on June 11 at
11 a.m.
