Justin Carter had been in Iraq just two weeks before he was killed at Base McKenzie, Iraq. He went through basic training at Fort Leonard Wood. Carter died of noncombat-related injuries when an anti-armor weapon discharged in an arms storage site.
His step-father, Brett Misemer, told the Mansfield News-Leader at the time of the funeral that his step-son loved four-wheeling and hunting. Misemer said he was privileged to have known Carter.
