LITTLE SWITZERLAND - Frank Russell Hollifield, 93, of Old Chestnut Grove Church Road, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine. Born on Feb. 3, 1920 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Manly and Effie Buchanan Hollifield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Rex, Bill, Fred, and Paul Hollifield and his sister; Mary Griffin. He was a member and Chairman of the Deacons at the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and participated in battles in Rhineland and in the European and Pacific Theaters. He was a charter member of the Mitchell County Gideon's Camp.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Hilda Cox Hollifield of Little Switzerland; his brother, Tommy Hollifield and wife, Lillian of Spruce Pine; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, Feb., 8, at noon at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Greg Burnette and Homer Murdock Jr. officiating. Interment followed in Burnette Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites. The family received friends Friday from 11 a.m.-noon at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Gideon's. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine assisted the family.
