Alexander was the son of William ATCHESON, Jr (c. 1807 - 1843) and Catharine MITCHELL (c. 1812 - aft. 1859).

He was a Private in the Civil War in the 117th IL INF Company H. Among the many battles in which he fought, he fought in the "Battles of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley" which ultimately led to the capturing of Mobile, AL on 9 Apr 1865. This has been called the last major battle of the Civil War.

He inherited several hundred acres from his father, but ended up in financial need by the end of his life. This poverty could have been due to his poor health which he contracted during the war and whereby he was admitted as an inmate at the Illinois Soldier's and Sailor's Home in Quincy, IL for a short stay. However he returned to Belleville where he ended up on the County Poor Farm where he died 19 Jul 1894.

Almost 2 years after his death and burial his body was removed on 30 Mar 1896 from burial at the County Poor Farm near Belleville and buried in Walnut Hill with Soldier's Honors due to the efforts of the Woman's Relief Corps #207 Aux to Hecker Post #443. The records at the Poor Farm were read "Alex Atkinson" and so his marker (also a gift of the WRC) has this misspelling of his name.

He married first Susannah BAILEY (no known issue), while on furlough in Sep 1864 he married Mary Ann KELMEL, however they divorced upon his discharge after the war based on accustions of infidelity while he was at war and they had no issue. His third wife was Elizabeth Matilda MCCULLOCH (daughter of Benjamin Franklin "Frank" McCulloch and Eliza Gray). They had five children.
