John Wallace Mason, 83, of Madison passed away early Saturday morning surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 14, 1926, in Spartanburg County, S.C., John was a US Army Air Force veteran of WWII, and honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1946. After the end of the war, he moved to Columbus, Miss. to help establish the Belk department store. In 1960, he joined Seminole Manufacturing and retired as vice president of southern sales in 1988. Mr. Mason was an active member and past president of the Columbus Lions Club, past president of the Mississippi Men's and Boy's Apparel Club, a member in the Mississippi and Alabama Seniors Golf Association, and a life deacon with the First Baptist Church of Columbus. In 2007, he and his wife moved to Madison to be closer to their family. They joined First Baptist Church of Madison.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Connie Mason; daughters, Gayle M. George and her husband Richard of Madison, Mary Beth M. Allen and her fiance Mike Strain of Cullman, Robin Boyles and her husband Durr of Jackson, Miss.; grandchildren, Kimberly George Salvail and husband Patrick Salvail, David George and fiancee Heather Blizzard, all of Madison, Mason Caldwell, Erin Rutledge Roberts and husband Brent Roberts of Madison, Reed Rutledge of Atlanta, Ga., and Gray and Connor Boyles of Jackson; and great-granddaughter, Katie Lauren Salvail.
He was predeceased by an infant son, five brothers, and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Columbus Miss., or The Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Madison.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Madison. Visitation will begin beforehand at 1 p.m. with Dr. Joe McKeever officiating. Interment will follow at Madison Memory Gardens.
