Enlisted on 5/2/1862 in Johnston County, NC; on 5/31/1862 he was mustered into "C" Co. NC 53rd Infantry as 5th Sergeant.
Absent, detached service, on all rolls until Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.

The 53rd Infantry Regiment completed its organization in April, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. The men were recruited in the following counties: Guilford, Mecklenburg, Chatham, Surry, Alamance, Stokes, Union, and Wilkes.
