Mrs. S.S. Battles, 55, of 249 Fair Acres Drive, died Tuesday at 11 p.m. at St. Mary's Hospital, where she had been a patient one week.
Mrs. Battles was a Hollywood film actress at one time and was known by her stage name, Sally O'Neill. Her first motion picture role was as a 15-year-old in "Mike." She played the role of teen-age Mary in "Sally, Irene and Mary," co-starring with Joan Crawford and Constance Bennett. Her last two movies were made in 1935.
Her starring role in "The Brat," directed by John Ford, was a highlight of her career. She also starred in several Broadway productions.
Born in New Jersey
She was born Virginia Louise Concepta Noonan, one of 11 children of Superior Court Judge and Mrs. Thomas Noonan, at Bayonee, NJ, October 23, 1912.
She married S.S. Battles, former head of Midwest Manufacturing Co. here, at Los Angeles in 1953. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Surviving with her husband are a stepson James Battles of Galesburg, two stepdaughters, Miss Sandra Battles of DeKalb and Mrs. R.S. (Joan) Wright of Lancaster, Ohio; four brothers, Gerard, George, Edward and Vincent Noonan, all of the Los Angeles area, and two sisters, Mrs. Isebelle Cameron and Mrs. Molly Kenaston, both of Palm Desert, CA.
Funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening at Hinchliff and Pearson Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
