William Shaffer Long was born on April 15, 1850 in Maryville, Blount, Tennessee. He was a farmer. He was found in the censuses of (1850-1910 Blount, TN). William died at the age of 63 years of age from organic heart trouble on April 1, 1914 Blount, Tennessee and was buried at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Blount, Tennessee.

When William was about 21 years old he met and married Mary Jane Eliza Russell, daughter of Isaac Taylor Russell (1832-1909) and Permelia McDaniel (1832-1895), on December 22, 1871 in Blount, Tennessee. Mary was 18 years old and she was born December 25, 1852 in Blount, Tennessee. She was found in the censuses of (1860-1900 Blount, TN). She was the eldest daughter of six known children with three sisters and two brothers as follows: Dorthula Russell (1857- ) who married William Russell (1860-1898) son of Jacob Hogan and Patience Galena Long Russell; Louisa Russell (1859- ); Abraham L Russell (1863- ); James A Russell (1865- ) who married Rebecca A Nichols (1867- ); and Martha Lucinda Russell (1869-1915) who married Floyd W Smith.

Mary died at the age of 55 years of age on August 26, 1908 in Blount, Tennessee and was buried with William at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Blount, Tennessee. Thirteen known children were born to the union of this marriage as follows: 1Isaac Christian, 2John Russell, 3James Taylor, 4Dorthula, 5Jacob Abraham, 6William Robert, 7Mary Louise, 8Nancy A, 9Sarah Patience, 10Charles Franklin, 11Anderson Finley, 12Margaret Rebecca, and 13Alexander Andrew Long. Eleven children married and had families of their own
