William rushed overseas when WW1 began, he had no intention of staying home. For him the war was something personal. One of his uncles and several of his cousins had been fighting on the Western Front in France since the war began in 1914. He was driving an ambulance well before the United States entered the war. When the war ended he held the rank of Captain. His first wife, whom he married in 1923, was Ruth Hobart. They married at St. Matthews Church in San Mateo, California. She was the daughter of playboy, Walter Hobart, and granddaughter of the Comstock silver and lumber millionaire Walter S. Hobart. She was a "rare beauty" - however, the marriage did not last long. Two children were born to the marriage and they divorced in 1948. Wife number two, was the beautiful Gertrude Hopkins Parrott, the recently divorced wife of William G. Parrott, who had been Bill's best man when he married his first wife, Ruth. They had a good marriage, but Gertrude died of cancer in 1958. Soon, he met the stunning beauty, Elizabeth Fullerton who was from Miami, Oklahoma. She had married in 1930, George L. Coleman, a multi-millionaire oil giant and was divorced. She received millions from the divorce including a Pebble Beach estate. They were an item quite quickly and soon they were married in a civil ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, followed by a church wedding in Paris. Rumors said it was a marriage of convenience. Four years later, Bill died and Elizabeth received one half of his estate. There was a court battle over the millions he left her by the children of his first marriage. Soon the lovely beauty heard of the death of a former neighbor in Pebble Beach, California, and was the first to offer her condolences to her friend's husband. They both understood each other's losses and she soon married him. In February, 1969, Elizabeth married Alexander George Francis Drogo Montagu, the 10th Duke of Manchester. She became the Duchess of Manchester. William Willard Crocker was a native of San Francisco, CA. Went to school at Groton and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale. He lived in the 53 room mansion, "Sky Farm" in Hillsborough, California. Died in August 1964 at age 71 yrs., of a stroke. Although his personal life was rather complicated, Bill Crocker was a towering figure in San Francisco philanthropist circles, and left endowments for several charities.
