Frank W. Brownlee, 89, of West Middletown, died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2013, in his home, surrounded by family.

He was born November 5, 1923, in West Middletown, a son of the late John and Dorothy Williams Brownlee.

Mr. Brownlee attended East Washington High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

He was the owner and operator of Brownlee's Homemade Ice Cream in West Middletown for more than 30 years. He was also employed by Weirton Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1976. After retiring from Weirton Steel, he worked for his son's company, Brownlee Trucking.

Mr. Brownlee was a member of Grove United Presbyterian Church, Weirton Steel 25-Year Club, Independent Steelworkers Union of Weirton, SNPJ Lodge 292 of Avella, a 50-year member of Bert C. Siders American Legion Post 643 of Avella and Cozy Camp of Brockway. He had served on Avella Area School Board and West Middletown Borough Board and was a charter member of West Middletown Fire Department.

Mr. Brownlee was a lifelong resident of West Middletown. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and hunting.

On November 27, 1948, he married Dorothy Roux, who survives.

He was the last of his immediate family.

Surviving Mr. Brownlee are three sons, Frank E. (Andrea) Brownlee of West Middletown, Jack (Nancy) Brownlee of Weirton, W.Va., and David (Laurie) Brownlee of West Middletown; six grandchildren, Dana (Jim) Gatewood, Chelsea Brownlee, Jonathan Brownlee, Jaclyn (Brennan) Bish and Allie and Hanna Brownlee; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Gavin Gatewood.

Preceding him in death are four sisters, Ruth Jones, Dorothy Andrews, Emma Keenan and Grace Ross; and two brothers, James and John Brownlee.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312, where additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Wednesday, February 20, with the Rev. Jack Emerick officiating. Burial will be in West Middletown Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded graveside by Bert C. Siders American Legion Post 643 of Avella. Memorial contributions can be made to West Middletown Volunteer Fire Department.
