William was the son of William "Billy" Davis and Phebe Catherine Isbell.

He was married on November 20, 1837 in Warren County, Kentucky to Christiana Adeline Hickman. They were the parents of seven children; Mique Ann, Jackson Benton, Emmaline Jane, Tantha Elesif, Elbert Cooper, Juliett Parker, and Jonathan Houston Davis.

Two years after Christiana's death, William was fortunate to find a highly regarded single lady to share his life and was remarried on March 14, 1875 in Lawrence County, Missouri to Miss Mahala "Haley" Gaither.

Elder William Riley Davis, M.G., was a Minister of the Gospel of the old Baptist Church (Regular Baptist) and was often referred to as Riley Davis.

Civil War-Union
In 1861, William Davis enrolled as a Private in Burrow's Company (B) Lawrence County Missouri Home Guard Regiment. The unit was mustered May 18, 1861 under Peter F. Clark's Independent Cavalry Company Missouri Home Guard, and was last mustered August 10, 1861 under the Enrolled Missouri Militia (E.M.M.).
