Irvin Columbus Gibson died at the age of 29 in 1896 due to influenza, before the birth of his youngest daughter, Ervie, who was not born until the following February in 1897. He was first buried in the Gibson Family Cemetery in Decatur County, Tennessee (near the Carroll County line) but was later moved about 1975 next to his wife, Mollie Gibson-Cary, in New Hope Cemetery in Carroll County, Tennessee.
