Jake, born July 18, 1950, grew up and spent his life in Newport News. He graduated from NNHS in '68 and worked as a master plumber at Brunk Mechanical for many years before working and retiring from Zeigler Plumbing in 2009. A highlight of his young adult years was spending 2-1/2 years in Alternative PAX Service in Germany from 1970 to 1972.
Jake and his family especially enjoyed camping at Highland Retreat and spent a memorable summer of service there in 1996.
Jake could fix practically anything, and family and friends would often call or stop by with projects for him. He was also a master storyteller, and could keep people entertained for hours with stories of years gone by, punctuated by his characteristic wit and laughter.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Andy and Fannie Hartzler, and his father-in-law, Gerald Showalter.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, June; daughter, Lauren (Brian Arbogast); son, Andrew; and grandsons, Branson and Jackson Arbogast; his siblings, Philip (Ginny), Lois (Carl Mericle), David (Kathleen), Daniel (Ramona), and Steve (Jane). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Evonne Showalter and the family, JoAnn (Neil) Morgan, Joyce (Robert) Brunk, and Jon (Becky) Showalter. He is also loved and remembered by many, including his large extended family and PAX brothers (Tom, Otto, Brian and Richard).
A heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Kessler, Kathy Pearson and the entire staff at VOA.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m. at Huntington Mennonite Church; visitation will follow the service.
Gifts in memory of Jake may be given to Highland Retreat of the Mennonite Church, 14783 Upper Highland Drive, Bergton, VA 22811.
