William N. Drake, an aged, well-known and highly-respected resident of Easton, died of Bright's disease at 8:15 last evening at the residence of William A. Lanterman, one of his sons-in-law, 231 Bushkill street. Had he lived until the 12th inst., he would have been 80 years old. The deceased had been in failing health during the past two or three years.

Mr. Drake was a native of Newton N.J. He came to Easton when he was 10 years of age and remained a resident thereafter. When a young man he conducted a shoe store on South Third street, and a few years later had a shoe store at Bank and Northampton streets, in part of the building now occupied by William Laubach & Son's store. Still later the deceased was in the employ of J.A. Nightingale and then of the C.M. Hapgood Shoe Company as a traveling salesman. In 1893 he retired from business.

An active Republican from the time that party was organized, he took a lively interest in all campaigns, national, state and municipal. In 1895 he was elected one of Easton's City Assessors, and still later was a member of the city's Board of Tax Revision and Appeals.

The deceased is survived by a widow and sons and daughters.

Mr. Drake was one of the oldest members of Columbia Council No. 13, O.U.A.M. and was a member of the Universalist denomination that built a house of worship in Easton, but disbanded many years ago.
