George was married (firstly) on October 16, 1851, in Northumberland County, Ontario, to Jane Ann Walker (born on September 11, 1830, in Haldimand Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, died on August 29, 1870, in Cramahe Township, Northumberland County, Ontario), the daughter of George Walker and Elizabeth Thompson. George was married (secondly) on April 17, 1872, at Castleton, Cramahe Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, to Mary Matilda Walker (born on November 13, 1838, at Colborne, Northumberland County, Ontario, died on December 16, 1927, at Seattle, Washington), the daughter of Thomas Walker and Mary Carr. Jane and Mary were first cousins.

George inherited his father's farm in Cramahe Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada, at the death of his mother, and then sold it to his brother Simeon. George then moved a few miles north to Castleton, Ontario, where he purchased property and became a schoolteacher and farmer, and then a merchant. Between 1851 and 1872 he owned, lived on, and sold four different properties in Cramahe Township. He is listed in 1864 and 1867 as serving in the Northumberland County Militia. On January 1, 1873 George purchased 75 acres of land at North Norwich, in Oxford County, Ontario. He sold this property on May 25, 1877, and moved to Austin Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. George signed a document of intention to become a United States citizen on March 6, 1878, at Lexington, Sanilac County, Michigan. Shortly before March 1882 their Michigan home burned down and they lost most of their possessions. United States citizenship was granted to him on July 9, 1888. He moved to Cass City sometime after 1885. His headstone has incorrect dates. It was placed several years after his death.
