John Albert Nitterhouse was the son of immigrant Daniel Niederhauss (aka: John D. Nitterhouse). John served in the War of 1812, was a carpenter in partnership with his brother Philip and independently. They were responsible for constructing the machinery for the Chambersburg paper Mill. He also served as County Commissioner.

John also had financial guardianship of his nephews George Washington Nitterhouse and Franklin Nitterhouse until they reached adult status. John was also the guardian of his brother-in-law Barnett Minnich after Barnett's parents passed.

John married late in life. He married Mary Ann Minnich (1813-1871) in 1846. They had 3 children: Barnett (1847-1917), John A. (1851-1869) and Mary Catherine (1854-1875). The family is buried side by side.
