Dr. John Durant Ashmore Jr. died peacefully on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville on October 13, 1926, he was the son of the late John Durant Ashmore Sr. and Maude Woodside Ashmore. He was married for 53 years to the former Margaret Ann Balentine.

Dr. Ashmore was a graduate of Greenville High School, Davidson College and the Medical College of South Carolina. He remained in Charleston for the surgical residency, which included one year as a Research Fellow of the National Heart Institute investigating the use of the artificial heart. He assisted Dr. Edward F. Parker in building the SC Medical College's first cardiopulmonary bypass pump. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1959 and by the American Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 1962.

After practicing general surgery in Greenville for 30 years, he became an associate director of surgical education at the Greenville Hospital System residency program. He was medical director of Health First, medical advisor to the Cancer Registry, a consultant to the HICA Data Bank, a principal investigator in breast research and a member of the Harvard University relative value study.

He was a member of the Greenville County Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Board of Surgery, where he served six years as oral examiner. He was past president of the SC Surgical Society, the Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons, past vice president of the Southern Surgical Association, past president of the Davidson College Alumni Association and the MUSC Alumni Association.

The Greenville Hospital surgical education program sponsors an annual lectureship in Dr. Ashmore's name. He was the recipient of the Order of the Palmetto and of the Distinguished MUSC Alumnus Award.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Atlantic in the Pacific Theater, and was a member of the Greenville Country Club, the Poinsett Investments, the Poinsett Club and the Cotillion Club.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by the following children and their spouses: Durant and Ann Ashmore, Ann and Dent Sparkman, Beattie and Lisa Ashmore and Holland and Rhys Williams. Also surviving are his grandchildren, John Durant Ashmore IV, William Kallam Ashmore, James Denton Sparkman IV, John McGee Sparkman, Margaret Katherine Sparkman, Kathleen Lightsey Ashmore, Beattie Balentine Ashmore Jr., John Dafydd Williams, Rhys Walker Williams and Bryn Balentine Williams, and a sister, Margaret A. Johnston of Thomasville, N.C.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Springwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta St., Greenville, SC 29605, or to the Alzheimer's Association , 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871-2005.
