Mrs. Brooks was born in Mingo County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late William Jennings and Polly (Maynard) Sheppard.
Opal was a retired first grade school teacher, teaching in the Fayette County, West Virginia Public Schools for 21 years. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was a very kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
In addition to her husband, who preceded her in death on June 9, 2001, and her parents, Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles William Brooks; and two brothers, Denver and Charles Sheppard.
Mrs. Brooks is survived by a very loving and devoted daughter, Brenda G. (Brooks) Smith of Verona; a brother, Mr. Radnor W. Sheppard of Sunbury, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Linda (Sheppard) Foughty of Columbus, Ohio; two very close and special grandchildren, Timothy C. "Tim" Smith of Staunton and L. Suzanne Losh and her husband, Kenny, of Waynesboro; and five great-grandchildren, Samantha Faris, Khayman Smith, Kamden Losh, Halah Smith and Lacy Losh.
In keeping with Mrs. Brooks' request, her memorial service will be private.
