The daughter of Henry Herman and Emma (Lutz)Graper. Both parents were from German immigrant families who traveled from New York to Indiana.
Siblings: Wilhelmina "Dora"(married to Augustus Hartwell), John Henry (married Ruby Oliver), Ida (who died in infancy), George Fred (married Anna Stringer), and Minnie (died in infancy).
She graduated from high school. She also went to school to become an elementry teacher in Danville, Illinois, and although she gave up her teaching ambitions, she had also studied herbal medicine of which she used throughout her life.
She married Dempsey Marshall on Jan. 20, 1906 in Madison, IN.
To this union were fourteen children born:
Paul (he did not marry), Ruby Bertha (md. Charles Holwager), Leslie Lutz (md. Kathleen Lockridge), Dempsy Lloyd (who did not marry), Vincent (md. Theda may Reed), Vera Gwen (md. Clyde Lockridge), Florence Elizebeth (md. William Dolby), John Denneth (md. Mary Donahue), Mamye Marie (md. Raymond Craddock), Harold (md. Nellie Belle Norris and later Theda Reed-Marshall), Chester Rodney (md. Theda Reed-Marshall), Wendell Wayne (never married/died in Korean War), and Lelia Jean (md. Rosco Cassidy).
She enjoyed playing a little organ, remembered for the goodies she made, such as taffy from the farms molasses they harvested. The cellar was always full with canned goods, herbs, smoked meat, and she was stern, "ran a tight ship", as her grandchildren remember, but was very loved by each and every member of the family.
