Wreck Injuries Lead To Death
Ben Ellis, 56-year-old Murphysboro railroad signalman injured in an accident Aug. 8 near Percy, died in St. Andrew's Hospital Monday afternoon.
Ellis was injured when a handcar jumped the main Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad tracks north of Percy. His son, Carl, suffered a scalp laceration, and was released from the hospital late last week. Two other workmen on the car were not hurt.
The railroad's division office in Murphysboro reported today an investigation has failed to provide a definite reason for the accident.
Jackson County Coroner Gale Williams said an inquest will be set after an autopsy report to establish the cause of death.
Ellis was born in Pomona in 1901.
He was married in 1919 to the former Edith Etherton, who survives.
He also leaves sons Herschel, Carl, and Dale, all of Murphysboro, Ray of Whittier, Calif., and Joe of Jackson, Miss.; daughters Mrs. Elizabeth Brunty of Carbondale and Mrs. Wanda Henry of Virden; a brother O. A. Ellis of East St. Louis, a half-brother Henry Ellis of Baldwin, and a half-sister Mrs. Myrtle Grammer of Pomona.
Ellis was a member of the Elm Street Baptist Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen of America.
Friends may call at the Crawshaw Mortuary Chapel in Murphysboro after 12 noon on Wednesday until noon Thursday, when the body will be removed to the Elm Street Baptist Church for services at 2 p.m. The Rev. W.W. Childers will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Cemetery.
