O. C. "CORKY" CORKERN
1921-2013

Ovit Coleman (O. C.) "Corky" Corkern was born on 12 Jul 1921 in Franklinton, Washington Parish, Louisiana to Isaac William Corkern and Idell (Sylvest) Corkern. He died on 26 Feb 2013 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi at the age of 91. He played football at Franklinton High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was deployed with the 105th Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. He and his brothers, Henry and Ezra, served together making beach assault landings in the Mediterranean Arena. His youngest brother, Ezra, was killed while going ashore in Sicily. O. C. was seriously wounded in 1944, in Italy, in sight of Monte Casino. After the war, he attended vocational school in Shreveport, Louisiana., where he learned a trade in heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration. He and a partner, Jack McMullan, started a business together, where he would, eventually, retire from a long, successful career. After retirement, he enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, and taking care of his Dachshunds, whom he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Henry Floyd Corkern, Percy Allen Corkern, Murphy Wilson Corkern Sr., Hugh Kassle Corkern, and William Ezra Corkern; and sister, Zulima (Corkern) Sullivan. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, his son and daughter from his first marriage, his former wife, two stepsons, one stepdaughter, three step-grandchildren, and one sister.
