Henry Serson Bergtholdt, age 96, a native of Newcastle, Calif., passed quietly in his sleep, February 5, 2013 in San Jose, Calif. He was the last family member of his generation and out lived his wife of 59 years, Lorraine Quinn Bergtholdt, and his daughter-in-law, Susan. He is survived by his sons, Douglas and Gary, his daughter-in-law, Debbie; his grandchildren; Christopher and Emily; as well as fifteen nieces and nephews.
Henry graduated from Placer High School, Auburn, Calif., in 1934. He earned his teaching credential from Armstrong College, Berkeley, Calif., and began teaching at McClellan Army Air base in Sacramento, Calif. He married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine, in 1940 and moved to Porterville, Calif., and taught at Porterville High School.
In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as an Ensign in the Supply Corps. He was assigned to the USS Bache DD470 and served in the Pacific until the end of World War II. He decided to continue his Navy career and served at Sampson, N.Y., Southhampton, Bermuda, and Bayonne, N.J. He also served on board the USS Mount McKinely during the Dorean War. His final years in the Navy, he served at the Oakland Naval Supply Center, in Calif., Port Lyautey, Morocco, and at Moffett Field, Calif. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1964 after 22 years of service.
He returned to teaching at Castro Valley High School until his final retirement in 1976. He moved to Lake Wildwood, Calif., where he and Lorraine made several trips to Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. both became docents at the Empire Mine State Park in Grass Valley, Calif. Henry was part of the "Over the Hill" gang that helped repair/build mine facilities and track down mining equipment. Both he and Lorraine did newspaper research for Empire Mine stories and cataloged the information for 20 years. Upon Lorraine's death, he moved to San Jose to be close to his son, Douglas.
