Scott Benjamin "Bennie" Herrin, Jr., 92, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 2, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Interment will follow at College Station Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Scott was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to the late Toy Scott and Pearl Herrin. Graduating from Central High School in Muskogee, OK on May 27, 1937, Bennie then continued for two more years at Muskogee Junior College. After being interrupted by World War II military service, he finished his formal education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He graduated on June 2, 1947. Bennie married Catherine Frensley in Port Arthur, TX in February 1948.

With the world locked in war, Bennie served his country as a torpedo bomber pilot flying seventeen combat missions in the Pacific. His duties ranged from long lonely submarine hunting over hundreds of miles of open ocean to flying low-level support for ground troops during the battle of Okinawa with machine gun bullets flying all around him. His squadron V.C. 99 was based on the carrier, U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay, and the yearly reunion trips to see his shipmates were a happy part of his retirement. Lieutenant Herrin served on active duty from 1942 to 1945 and in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1945 to 1953. The pictures and models in his office of the Grumman TBF "Avenger", which he flew in service of his country, let you know that he was very proud of his military career.

Bennie began his career with the Gulf Oil company in Port Arthur, Texas, in June of 1947 and rose to the executive position of departmental superintendent. He was a respected administrator who was always very efficient and yet popular with his workers, because of his personal friendliness and consistently fair treatment. He retired on December 31, 1982. Bennie married Wanda Lee Martin on October 5, 1991, in Muskogee, OK.

He was a person who knew how to work, but also how to have fun. His love for sports and the outdoors was obvious, as he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf with his friends. His knowledge of birds and flowers impressed everyone who knew him. His interests also extended to art, through his collections of pictures, illustrations and glassware. On the golf course or in the fishing boat, his easygoing disposition and great sense of humor made him a joy to be with.

His love for the Lord and the way he lived it each day, made him an example and a leader at Central Christian Church, where he was a longtime member and supporter. Filling the office of Deacon, as well as trustee, was a privilege for Bennie and a blessing for the church. Wanda and Bennie's partnership serving God at Central Christian Church was an inspiration.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Frensley Herrin, in August, 1990; and a grandson, Scott Eddy.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda; stepdaughter, Phyllis Rand and husband, Billy Tom, of Beaumont, TX; stepsons, James Martin and wife, Joy, of Baton Rouge, LA, and Hershel Martin and wife, Lynett, of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, Adele Martin-Pakulski and husband, Maciej, of Warrington, England, Olivia Martin, of Tulsa, OK, and H. Lee Martin III and wife, Shannon, of Owasso, OK; great-grandchildren, Isaac James and Ethan Lee Martin, of Owasso, OK, and Madeline Grace Phillips, of Tulsa, OK.
