There will be no services and no calling hours for 99 year old Allen S. Jones a lifelong resident of Potsdam, who died February 27, 2013 while residing at the River Ledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, NY.
He was born July 7th 1913 in Potsdam, the oldest son of Wilbur and Mabel Jones. He attended Potsdam Grammar School and Potsdam High School and later earned his GED. His 2nd grade class picture is on the wall of the Potsdam Museum and on page 45 in the Images of America Potsdam book.
Early in his youth, he was a caddy and green's keeper at the Potsdam Golf Coarse.
During the depression he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC). In 1936 he worked for the Sullivan-Hazel Garage at 29 Maple Street in Potsdam; and in 1954-1960 at the same location he operated Jones' Flying A Service Station. In 1960 he moved across the street to 27 Maple Street where he owned and operated the Jones' Gulf Service Station for 17 years. In 1970 Allen started working at Clarkson College Maintenance Department and retired in 1976.
On August 23, 1937 he married Dorothy Herrick, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Roy and Addie Herrick, at the home of Mary and Herbert Jenner, at the corner of Brown's Bridge and the Hannawa-Colton Road.
Allen was a member of Amber Lodge #395 Free & Accepted Masons in Potsdam, former member of the "Stag Club" and the "Hanson Pond Hunting Club" in Tupper Lake, NY. He was an avid golfer at Potsdam Country Club and enjoyed golfing in South Carolina. He enjoyed hunting and fishing on the Jordan and Racquette Rivers. In the winter he spent time ski-dooing with his friends in the Adirondack, long lake, Cranberry Lake, and Sevey's Corners areas. He was a long time baseball Mets fan as well as a Clarkson Hockey fan.
Mr. Jones is survived by his son David A. Jones, daughter in law Ann F. Jones, four grandchildren, Christopher Jones, Hilary (Jones) Ortiz, Heather Lewis, Aaron Jones and five great grandchildren, Amaziah Jones, Sam, Sarah, and Noah Ortiz, and Amelia Lewis. A sister Dorothy Dafoe of New Braunsfels, TX also survives Allen.
His wife Dorothy Jones, two brothers, William Jones and Arthur Jones predeceased him.
