Obituary of John Abernathy Maxwell

Former Madison Co. Sheriff Dies John A. Maxwell, 81, former Madison County Sheriff, township trustee, school board official and farmer, died at the home of his son, Ernie L. Maxwell, 289 ½ West Spring St., Columbus, on Friday afternoon.
Maxwell was born near Piketon, Ohio on March 22, 1874 and came to Madison County in 1895. Here he married Rosa Morgan, a county resident, and started a farming career. Mrs. Maxwell died in 1953.
Maxwell was a trustee of Canaan Township for nine years and was a president of the Canaan Township School Board for 18 years. He was elected as Sheriff of Madison County in 1931 and re-elected to that post in 1933.
Survivors include two sons: Ernie L., who is assistant warden of the Ohio Penitentiary and Henry, of West Jefferson; and five daughters, Mrs. Paul Murray of West Jefferson, Miss Ruth Maxwell and Mrs. Evelyn Ballenger of Columbus, Mrs. Cassie L. Brown and Mrs. Hanna Garrett, of Urbana.
The funeral services were held on Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m., in the Ferguson Funeral Home in Plain City.
Interment was in the Foster Chapel Cemetery on the Georgesville-West Jefferson Road.
