Alvin Aastrup, age 87, formerly of Thornton, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Thursday at Thornton United Methodist Church with Pastor Crystal Oberheu presiding. Interment with Veteran's Honors by Anton-Juhl Post #440 American Legion will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 pm Wednesday at Retz Funeral Home, 107 N. 2nd Street, Thornton. Those desiring to send an expression of sympathy may consider a donation in his honor to the National Parkinson Foundation or the Thornton United Methodist Church.

Alvin M. Aastrup was born on April 4, 1925 in Humboldt, Iowa to Alfred M. and Anna (Pahus) Aastrup. He was a graduate of Swaledale High School. He served 2½ years in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Ardeth Schmalle on June 26, 1948 in the Thornton United Methodist Church. They farmed in the Thornton area for 42 years. To this union, three children were born: Jennifer, Jerry, and Sibyl.

Alvin was active in community affairs. He served as district soil commissioner for 6 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Anton Juhl Post #440. He served on the Meservey-Thornton School Board and the Sheffield Care Center Board of Directors. He was a member of the Thornton United Methodist Church, where he held many church offices. His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, and drinking coffee with his friends.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ardeth; two daughters, Jennifer Russell of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sibyl (Jim) Jorgensen of Thornton; four grandchildren: Jeffrey (Juli) Russell and Timothy (Molly) Russell of Cincinnati, Ohio, Megan and Mariah Jorgensen of Thornton; two great grandchildren: Charlie and Ellie Russell of Cincinnati; two brothers: Robert (Verna) Aastrup of Mason City and Delmar (Pam) Aastrup of Noel, Missouri; one brother-in-law, Verdell (Bonnie) Schmalle of Fayette and one sister-in-law, Beulah Schmalle of Belmond.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Aastrup, his son-in-law, Jim Russell, and his parents.
