Elman (Al) Bergt, Lincoln, born November 10,1923, Schuyler to Rev. Alfred A. and Louise (Bruns) Bergt.
Al attended parochial grade school and two years of high school in Schuyler. He graduated from St. Paul's High School, Concordia, Mo. in 1941, and attended Concordia College in Ft.Wayne, Indiana before enlisting in the Navy in 1944. He was a member of the Champion Boat Crew at USNTC at Farragut, Idaho. Al trained to be a Sonar Operator and was Stationed in the Philippines during WWII where he was a Ship's Service Barber.
He attended UNL before taking a job at Elgin Watch Co. Al worked as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years before retiring in 1981. He is a life member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. After retirement, He volunteered for many years at the Lutheran Food Pantry and the Lincoln Food Bank. Al is a member of Evangelical United Lutheran Church. He loved to fish and hunt. He touched many lives with his "Handyman" skills which he performed all during his life.
Family members include wife Alice; his son's family, Dick and Jan Bergt of Lincoln and Grandchildren; Amy (Bergt) and Steve Marra, Brandon and Traci Bergt, Ferris and Tiffany Bergt, Joel Bergt and Alexa Bergt; 6 great grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren; His daughter's family, Bev and Len Westerkamp of Greeley, Colorado, and Grandchildren Megan, Whitney and Austin Westerkamp; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joan Bergt, St. Louis, Mo.; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by Parents and three sisters.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. on Monday June 22, 2009, with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Roper and Sons funeral home. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday June 23, 2009 at Lincoln Memorial Park, Everyone meet at Gate 2.
Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m. at Roper and Sons Funeral Home, 4300 "O" Street with Rev. Robert Bergt officiating. Memorials to Evangelical United Lutheran Church, 5945 Fremont St., Lincoln 68507 or Homestead Rehabilitation Center, 4735 S. 54th St. Lincoln 68515.
