The son of journalist and financier Henry Villard, and grandson of anti-slavery proponent William Lloyd Garrison, he was the editor of political weekly periodical "The Nation." he supported Women's Suffrage and Trade Union law reform, and was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
