Charles Cortez Abbott Jr., of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away after a long illness to join his Heavenly Father on Thursday, February 28, 2013. He was born on June 27, 1941, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the late Charles Cortez Abbott and Louise Slocum Abbott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, John William Abbott and Hunter Austin Abbott. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of nearly forty-nine years, Byrd Williams Abbott (daughter of John "Billy" and Laura Williams) whom he met at a Tea Dance at Farmington Country Club. In addition to his wife, Byrd, he is survived by their sons, Charles C. Abbott III and his wife, Amy, of Los Cabos, Mexico, and James A. Abbott of Alexandria, Virginia; by his granddaughters, Wylie Elizabeth, Halston Hayes and Olivia Susan Abbott; by his siblings, Margaret Ellen Eubank, Louise Williams, William Abbott, and Preston Abbott, and their families. Also surviving him are his sister-in-law, Martha Hayes Anderson and her husband, Ward, and their children; and his childhood Governess, Emma Feige, whose devoted love and kindness endeared her as a member of the family not only to Cort but to his children as well. Mr. Abbott was a graduate of The Harvard Business School, The University of Virginia (UVA), The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville Connecticut, and Browne and Nichols in Cambridge Massachusetts. While at the University he was a member of the Raven Society, Sigma Chi, and the ROTC. Cort proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was a recipient of the Norfolk Mace. He had an extensive career in finance with R.J. Reynolds's Tobacco, Maersk Sea-Land and Bonded Distribution. He was also active in the community and in the arts having served on the boards of The Richmond Ballet, Computers4Kids (C4K), and The Arts Council of Winston-Salem which was the first Arts Council in the United States. Cort was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church having served for many years both as a Deacon and as an Elder. He had a passion for Golf, Tennis, Fishing and Skiing, and also a love of writing, children, and puppies! The family extends their sincere thanks to Cort's caregivers, Paula, Sandy, Mary, Belle, Lisa, Brenda, and all of the staff at Rosewood Village, the Martha Jefferson House and Legacy Hospice for their kind and compassionate care during his illness.
