George C. Winter, 91, of Decatur, IL passed away on Monday (March 4, 2013) at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur, IL.

George's family will be having a private memorial service at a later date. Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion is assisting the family with the arrangements.

George was born on January 18, 1922 in Appleton, WI, the son of George and Irene (Due) Winter. He grew up in Birchwood, WI and after graduating high school he worked for a short time with his father in the plywood mills before joining the United States Coast Guard where he served in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during WWII. George retired from F.W. Means Company in Decatur, IL. He loved spending time with his family and friends and sharing stories of times gone by. He was an avid fisherman who loved spending afternoons in his canoe in some remote corner of the lake, hoping to catch the big one. Carving was his hobby and he carved many canes, plaques and figurines for his friends and family.

He married Susan Backiline of West Palm Beach, FL in 1946. Together they had three children: Robert (Chris) Winter of Juneau, AK, Ronald (Lois) Winter of Rockford, IL and Christine (Roger) Clark of Decatur, IL. George has five grandchildren: Jennifer (Greg) Thomas of Mt. Zion, IL, Kelly Winter of Portland, OR, Craig (Emily) Winter of Silverton, OR, Tyler (Lynn) Clark of Decatur, IL, Melissa Neal of Rockford, IL and two step-grandchildren: Robert Clark and Jon Clark. He was also blessed to have eight great grandchildren: Zander, Eli, Taylor, Tiffany, Jonah, Cassie, Addison and Josh. George has one sister: Alice Winter who resides in Vernon Hills, IL.

George was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother: Robert Winter and one son: Ronald Winter and his wife Lois.

George was a fine son, a wonderful husband, a great brother, a loving father and grandfather and a friend to many. He will be long missed and never forgotten. We love you always, Dad.
