ENDS LIFE THURSDAY NIGHT BY HANGING.

“Farewell to my home and my friends, if I have any,” were the words scribbled on an old leaf by Emily Nifong, before she hanged herself at her home two and one-half miles from town, Thursday night. Her relatives say the act was caused by despondency and mental derangement.

The decomposed body was found Friday morning at seven o’clock hanging to a chestnut limb in a wood about one hundred yards from her house, by Emily Nifong, her niece. She had cut the rope off of an old fashioned bedstead and gotten a ladder from the barn. She seemed to have tied one end of the rope around her neck in a draw knot, and climbed upon the ladder and wrapped the other end around the limb, and then jumped off the ladder.

She was sixty-two years old and had resided in the immediate neighborhood of her death all of her life. Several days ago her brother, Ben Nifong, nailed her up in her house and kept her there ten days without sufficient food, saying she was crazy. The neighbors reported the matter to the sheriff, and Deputy Shaw and Dr. Smock went out and broke the door in to free her. Dr. Smock gave her a preliminary examination and pronounced her sane.

She owned sixty five acres of land, and her brother owned five adjoining the tract, and there seemed to have been trouble between the two as to who should manage the land. A few days before her death, she deeded the tract to her brother and the trouble seemed to be ended.

On the afternoon before she hanged herself that night, she read her Bible, sang several songs, helped pick beans, and seemed in the best of spirits. But at time she would be despondent and set as though she wanted to take her life. She lived within a few yards of Ben’s house, and usually took her meals there. Friday morning, so the story goes, they took breakfast to her at five o’clock, and she was gone. The search began immediately and she was found at seven o’clock.

The rope she hanged herself with was wound around the limb fifteen times and tied in six knots at the top side of the limb. She was barefooted and her feet were within five inches of the ground and were torn and bruised. The body was in a decomposed state, and it was the most grewsome [sic] sight one could imagine.

Interment was made in the family burying ground Saturday afternoon at four o’clock.

WOMAN IS FOUND HANGING TO TREE

MISS EMILY NIFONG, 62 YEARS OLD TAKES HER OWN LIFE.

Miss Emily Nifong hung herself to the limb of a chestnut tree, near her home at New Salem, last Thursday night. The body was found by her niece, Miss Emily Nifong, the next morning. Miss Nifong was sixty-two years of age, and left a note, saying, “Farewell to my home and my friends, if I have any”. She lived by herself, a short distance from the home of her brother. It is said that the two did not get along well, and some time back, her brother Ben, fastened her up in her house for ten days, claiming she was crazy. Since then, she deeded her 65 acres of land to her brother. She lived only a short distance from Ben’s house, and usually took her meals there. The night before she hung herself, she read the bible and sang some songs, but it said to have seemed despondent. She took a ladder to the tree and climbed up and tied the rope around the limb several times and swung off. Her feet were almost touching the ground, when found. Miss Nifong was a lady of excellent character, but was alone in the world, and decided to end her existance [sic].
