Lloyd was born to Edwin Walter Baker of Indiana and Lena Elizabeth McPherson of California, but spent a great deal of his boyhood as the stepson of Herbert Earl Missamore beginning in 1925. It appears it was a good relationship, including seven additional siblings. His birth date soon after World War One predisposed him to service in World War Two, where he served Honorably as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Forces.
