Thomas Shaw was born in rural Texas, the son of Louis and Emma Shaw. As a young man, he learned to play both the harmonica and guitar and soon began to play local parties and on street corners. During the early 1920's, he left his home and played music for a short time with the legendary bluesman, Blind Lemon Jefferson.

By the 1930's, Shaw settled in California where he opened his own club known as the "Little Harlem Chicken Shack." For a short time, he also had a radio show that was broadcast out of Tijuana, Mexico.

During the 1940's, Shaw became an ordained minister and served as pastor of Noah's Temple Of the Apostolic Faith in San Diego, where he served for two decades. He was "rediscovered" during the late 1960's and was soon recording for the Blue Goose and Advent Labels in San Diego. Shortly after his rediscovery, Shaw became a popular attraction at blues/jazz festivals across California and was soon engaged in various European tours, where he also made some recordings for the Blues Beacon Record label.

Shaw continued performing until poor health forced him to quit. He died during open heart surgery at Donald Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California in 1977.
