He enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on Nov 13, 1862, as a resident of Nankin Township, Michigan, aged 21.

He was called to action in Company H, 8th Cavalry Regiment Michigan on February 3, 1863; and was captured by the Confederates, becoming a POW on August 6, 1864, during the raid on Macon Georgia. He remained in the Andersonville War Prison until his Parole on March 15, 1865.

He was finally transfered back to his regiment on July 20, 1865, earning a Distinguished Service Award. He was mustered out on September 22, 1865 in Nashville, TN.
