He was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Cass County, Mich., to Claire Akin and Leona Shaner.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Akin; a son, Gregory (Cheryl) Akin, and two daughters, Christine (Louis) Larson and Teresa Akin, all of Elkhart; five grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Akin of Michigan and James (Diane) Akin of Elkhart; and four sisters, Alma Casleman, Geraldine Algemyer, Lucille Konanz and Claira Berkey.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place. A memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Keith McFarren of Faith United Methodist Church of South Bend will officiate. Online condolences may be sent to www.billingsfuneralhome.com.
Mr. Akin retired as a maintenance employee from Kent Co. and also was self-employed making customized motorcycles.
