Was born in Union County, July 5, 1833, and the only educational advantages he ever enjoyed was that afforded by the public or common schools of this county. This, however, was sufficient to insure him a rudimentary understanding that has enabled him to pull himself through the world with credit and more than ordinarily intelligence. Mr. Givens has never pushed himself to the front in matters political or otherwise; or the contrary, he has been quiet and backward. While he has never taken a prominent stand, he is yet a man of positive convictions and noble impulses. His father, E.L. Givens, was born in Bourbon County, Ky., and immigrated to this county in 1823. His mother, Polly G Waller, was born in Union County, and raised and educated here. Mr. Givens has been twice married--first to Miss Docia Holt, a native of Union County, and second to Miss Ellen Blackwell, also a native of Union County. His second wife is still living. By his first marriage six children were born; by his last, only one. Of the entire number only four are living, named a follows: Samuel G [Gip], Bettie R., Mary Sue and Aaron. Mr. Givens is a farmer and has been all his life. He is the owner of ninety acres of good land, and enjoys life in the heart of his home. He is highly respected and highly connected.
