Nelle Chamlee Howard
The memorial service for Mrs. William Schley Howard of Stone Mountain, will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 7 at Decatur Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Howard, 83, died Friday afternoon of a heart attack. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service.

A native of Canton, GA, Nelle Chamlee Howard came to Decatur to attend Agnes Scott College where she graduated in 1934 with a degree in chemistry. There she was an active student leader, serving as president of the Glee Club, the Journalism Club, a charter member of the Chi Beta Phi Sigma scientific fraternity, a member of the May Court and recipient of the Hopkins Jewel as most representative of the ideals of Agnes Scott College. In 1984, she was honored by the Agnes Scott Alumnae Association with the Service to the College Award for her consistent work in beautifying the Alumnae Garden and landscapes of the College.

An active citizen of Decatur and Dekalb Counties throughout her adult life, Mrs. Howard served on the Decatur Recreation Board in the late fifties, was a library volunteer through the Decatur Junior Service League (the forerunner of the Junior League of Dekalb, Inc.) was a circle leader at Decatur Presbyterian Church, and she taught flower arranging classes for the YWCA. She was perhaps best known as a flower show judge and horticulturist. "I became interested in gardening in high school", said Nelle, "when I designed a formal garden for a home economics project." She studied with the National Council of Garden Clubs and was named a National Council Flower Shower master Judge and a landscape design consultant by the NCGC. She has held offices in the Designers Study Club, a regional judge's study group of which she was a charter member, the Decatur Flower Show Association, the North Georgia Council Flower Show Judges, the Garden Club of Georgia, and the National Council of Garden Clubs. Mrs. Howard held certificates as a master judge, a landscape design critic, a daffodil judge, and in Sho Fu School of Japanese Flower Arranging. IN 1984, she received an "Award of Merit" by the garden clubs of Georgia for her contribution to the gardening movement.

She was the widow of William Schley Howard, Jr., a prominent attorney, whose career included service as assistant solicitor of the State Court of Dekalb County prior to his retirement and death in 1974. She is survived by her daughters, Lucia Howard Sizemore (Mrs. Thomas A. Sizemore, III), and Elinor Howard Cook (Mrs. Leslie W. Cook) of Stone Mountain, four grandchildren, Julia Sizemore Nesbit of Chattanooga, Laura M. Sizemore of Durham, NC. William Alexander Cook, and Michael Howard Cook of Stone Mountain; and a sister, Alice Chamlee Booth of Woodstock, GA.

It was Mrs. Howard's wish that in lieu of flowers contribution be made to the Organ Fund of Decatur Presbyterian Church or the Nelle Chamlee Howard Fund at Agnes Scott College or the Garden Club of Georgia Scholarship Fund.
