HERBERT ADLER

It was with sorrow that we who knew Herbert Adler in our Southold Community heard of his sudden passing on November 15th in New York City. Mr Adler and his family of Great Neck came to live each summer in their home on Town Harbor Lane, Southold, not far from the bay. That he is not to be part of another summer’s life here brings a poignant sense of loss to his many friends.

For Herbert Adler was the kind of person whom one wants and needs at close at hand – a friend. There was the quiet assurance of friendship in his eye, his manner, thought and speech. His acts of kindness were numerous and never ostentatious. The modesty and gentility in his nature would never allow room for a sense of his own importance. He was dependable, loyal, sincere and kind.

When we talked with him, as we liked to do, we were aware of the fundamental stability and integrity of the man, of the serenity and sweetness of his spirit, of his intelligent thought. We delighted in the humorous smile, and in the philosophic viewpoint.

We were aware of his enthusiasm for Southold’s natural beauties. He was a great fisherman and loved the bays and creeks, spending much time off shore with hook and line. It is hard to believe that we shall not hear again the tales of the fish hauled in, and enjoy the gentle humor in the telling of them.

Mr Adler’s life was close-knit and happy with his wife Rita to whom he had been married for twenty-nine years, and with his two sons Herbert Jr and John. We knew that first and foremost in his interests and affections were his family and his home.

Herbert was a Kentuckian. He was born October 5, 1890 in Nicholasville, and was raised as a boy in Shelbyville. He was the son of Rosa and Julius Adler of Kentucky. His wife was Rita Rodenbeck of Phoenix, Arizona.

In New York he carried on an importing and exporting business, was for a long time a part owner of Wm J Boehner & company. He had charge particularly of the collecting and exporting ginseng root to China. Among many relationships a most important and happy one was with his Chinese associates and friends who were devoted to him, as he was to them.

For years Mr Adler held membership in the Kentucky Society. In Southold he was a member of the Southold Yacht Club.

The immediate family surviving him are his wife and two sons, a sister, Mrs Anna Goodman of Los Angeles, Cal, and a brother Ralph Adler of Portchester NY, to who the sympathy of the community is given.

The service at Great Neck conducted by Rev Donald Harrington, minister of the Community Church, New York was of beautiful and simple nature which seemed to be especially expressive of the character of Herbert Adler.
