Born in Crenshaw County, he was the son of Clayborn and Mary Katherine Flowers Atwell of Oneonta. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1972 and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics attending Snead State and UAB. He was employed as a chemical analyst with ACIPCO and was a member of Oneonta's Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Surviving besides the parents are wife Roxanne Russell Atwell, Odenville; sons Jacky Harold (Cayla) Atwell II, Oneonta, and Jason Hoven, Remlap; daughters Deanna Lee (Bryan) Reeves, Walnut Grove, and Tiffany (Clint) Newbourne, Pinson; seven grandchildren.
Raymond Bowman and Bric Latham conducted memorial services Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. from Philadelphia Baptist Church.
