Ms. Bernice (Bronislawa) D. Kurowski, 96, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2009. She was a three-year resident of Phoebe Berks Health Center. Born in Reading April 4, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Victoria Swiencinski and Anthony Kurowski. Throughout her life, Bernice was a dedicated and meticulous designer and dressmaker. She owned her own business, Bernice Dress Shop, on Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, from 1952 until her retirement in 1998. Although Bernice had many friends and touched many lives, nothing was more important to her than her family. She took great pride in being "a Kurowski," a caregiver to her mother, siblings, nieces and nephews. Bernice is survived by a sister, Josephine "Jessie" Smith, widow of James C. Smith, Douglassville, and a brother Edmund W., husband of Bernice, Reading. She was preceded in death by six brothers: Frank, Stanley D., Walter, J.P., Raymond A., Leon V., George J. "Whitey," a one-time major league baseball star; and two sisters, Pauline and Julia. Although Bernice never had children, she was a "mother" to Christine Schifalacqua, wife of I.E. Schifalacqua, Sinking Spring. Bernice is survived by 24 nieces and nephews. A visitation with the family will be held Wednesday from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. at Kopicki-Bradley Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Gethsemane Chapel at 10 a.m. with burial immediately following. Memorial gifts may be made to Phoebe-Devitt Homes for the support of patient care at Phoebe Berks Health Center.

"Bronislawa" is a common first name for Polish females; perhaps that was Bernice's birth name.
