Rachel Mary Westcott married Delancey Trefry in 1853, seven years before he became a captain but already a mariner travelling the world aboard the great sailing ships of the day. After he became a captain, Rachel often traveled with him, even having two of her children at sea (one of whom was also buried there.)

In 1885, when the Age of Sail had waned, she and Delancey moved to Boston, where some time before 1890, she opened an employment agency. They later moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, and eventually moved into the home of their daughter, Maria, and her husband J.P. Crosby, where both she and her husband died.

In addition to the children linked to below, the couple also had the following, all born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia except for Oceanus, who was born at sea.

Caleb Cook - February 28, 1854 - October 27, 1928

Mary Phedon - December 22, 1855 - Jun 1858 (Yarmouth, Nova Scotia)

Maria Delancey - December 18, 1857 - April 29, 1944 (Greenwich, Connecticut)

Henry (Harry) Dixon - March 20, 1863 - September 21, 1942 (Greenwich, Connecticut)

Foster Crosby - April 28, 1865 - February 26, 1866 (Arcadia, Nova Scotia)

William Parker - June 1, 1868 - September 11, 1868 (Arcadia, Nova Scotia)

Oceanus Shaw (Ocey) - April 17, 1870 (born at sea) - January 13, 1955 (New Haven, Connecticut)

Willard Whitman - January 10, 1874 - May 29, 1875 (Arcadia, Nova Scotia)

Gravesite Details

Rachel and her husband were (per Putnam Cemetery records) buried in the area owned by the Crosby family but that space is now almost devoid of markers, probably lost due to vandalism.
