Epitaph reads: "Sacred to the memory of G.W. Bryant, who died Apr 3, 1872 from wounds received Sept. 19, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, while fighting in the Confederate Army. AE 33 y'rs 4 M's 5 d'ys"

George W. Bryant was 2nd Sergeant in Company H, 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles (Dismounted). He lost a leg at Chickamauga, but was elected by his company to have his name placed on the Confederate Roll of Honor for bravery in that action.

Released from the service on account of losing a leg, he is found in the 1870 census in Monterey County, trying to make it farming. Apparently, he had no family.
