During the period of his legal practice, he assisted George Vanderbilt in purchasing large tracts of land in the mountains of western North Carolina.
After his death, his large personal library of more than 30,000 volumes was bequeathed to to the city of Asheville as the Pack Memorial Library's Sondley Reference Library.
