William J. Smothers was born November 12, 1925 at Sigourney, Iowa. He was the son of William and Henrietta Buehnemann Smothers. He graduated from Lone Tree High School. On November 27, 1948 he married June Maiden at the Martelle United Methodist Church.
William worked at the lumberyard in Martelle and at Farmers Cooperative in Martelle from 1948 to 1987. William was a member of the United Methodist Church in Martelle and the Knights of Pythians.
He is survived by his wife June of Martelle; three daughters, Sherri (David) Plueger of Monticello, Kay (David) Prasil of Lisbon, Diana (Daniel) Driscoll of Mechanicsville; one son, Steven Smothers of Ankeny; ten grandchildren; three brothers, Robert of Iowa City, Gary of Lone Tree, Berle of Sumner and one sister, Kathleen Dougherty of Urbandale. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wilfred, Marion and Lowell. Memorials may be given in William's name to the United Methodist Church of Martelle.
