Joseph V. Ryan, 77, of 44 E. Main Street., Marcellus, died August 18 at home. A native of Navarino, he lived for many years in New York City before moving to Marcellus in 1955. He graduated from Onondaga Central School in 1941 and the Simmons School of Embalming & Mortuary Science in Syracuse in 1947. He was a funeral director and was founder and owner of Ryan Funeral Home, Marcellus since 1955. He was the Marcellus Town Justice for 21 years, retiring in 1983, and also served on the Marcellus Town Board for many years.
He was a member and past president of the Onondaga County Association of Magistrates, a member of the Onondaga Oswego Funeral Director's Association, and the National Funeral Director's Association. He was a past president of the Marcellus Citizens Club and a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Marcellus. A Navy Veteran of World War II, he was a member and past commander of the Marcellus American Legion Ralph Share Post # 297.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Margaret "Peggy" Gallagher of Marcellus; one daughter, Mary Ryan Carlton of Marcellus; one son, James J. of Rochester; one sister, Jean Whalen of Syracuse; and 6 grandchildren. A funeral mass was held August 21, in St. Francis Xavier Church, Marcellus. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Marcellus. Contributions may be made to Marcellus Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Fund, State Hill Rd., Marcellus, NY 13108. Ryan Funeral Home, Marcellus had charge of arrangements.
