Callie Ellen Deering was born April 17, 1908, in Maverick, Texas, to the home of Donnie Lauaritha Thaxton Grimes and Harvey Alexander Grimes. She passed from this life on Sunday, January 8, 1995, in Richardson, Texas, at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 22 days.
She taught school for 22 years, teaching in Texas her first year, and in New Mexico after she moved there with her family. Her father homesteaded in DeBaca County and Callie Ellen filed her own homestead close by. She got a teaching job at Kenna, then at Circle Y School at Olive. She briefly taught at Cloudcroft, but returned to Circle Y.
She met John Emery Deeing while teaching at Circle Y and they were married February 12, 1938. They had three children while ranching in the Olive community near Kenna. When her older two girls were of school age, she again began teaching at Circle Y where she continued until it closed in 1951. She decided to get her B.A. Degree in Education after teaching for 17 years, so she enrolled at ENMU where she had had classes when it was a Junior College. She earned both her M.A. and B.A. in Education from Eastern prior to going to Ramah to teach her last five years.
She returned to Portales to live after retiring at Ramah and continued to live here until her death.
