Mary Carlin Downham, 89, passed away peacefully at home on September 19, 2011. Aware that she was near death, she was able to express love and gratitude to her cherished family and friends.
A proud native of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Downham was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Richard Francis Downham. She is also preceded in death by an infant son, Doran Michael and a teenage granddaughter, Terri Dawn.
Mr. and Mrs. Downham lived most of their married life in Alexandria, Virginia before retiring to Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, Virginia. In retirement, Mrs. Downham was an active member of the Lake of the Woods Players Theatre group. She was a devout Roman Catholic and attended Mass daily at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She loved her many friends at "The Lake". True to her Irish heritage, Mrs. Downham was tender of heart and strong in will. Her greatest joy was being mother to her six children whom she leaves behind; Richard F. Downham Jr. and his wife Suzy, Kerry T. Downham and his wife Kathy, Dennis G. Downham and his wife Darla, Margaret Downham McClay and her husband Jay, John C. Downham and his wife Michelle and Mary Downham Carroll and her husband Jim. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mary Carlin Downham was a precious creation of God. May she now relish the joys of heaven. Friends may call on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Laurel Hill Funeral Home in Spotsylvania, Virginia. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow in the St. Mary's cemetery.

Doran Michael Downham was born 12 September 1947 and died 12 September 1947 in Alexandria, Virginia. He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, Maryland with Everly Wheatley handling the arrangements.
