Bernard L. (Bernie) Wallander, age 68, of 2720 Brodtke Road, Cato, died Monday afternoon, June 14, 2004 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Whitelaw. The Rev. James Jugenheimer will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with burial of his cremated remains to be held later in the parish cemetery.
Bernie was born April 11, 1936 in Manitowoc County, son of the late Edward and Theresa Riederer Wallander. He graduated from St. Mary's Grade School in Clarks Mills and attended Valders High School. On Nov. 7, 1959, he was married to the former Lois A. Neuser at Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Manitowoc.
Bernie worked for C. Harvey Redi-Mix from 1966 until his retirement in 2001. The past three years he assisted his son Todd, his grandson Andrew, and special friend, Bob Sitman at Wallander Repair in Whitelaw. Bernie and his special friend, Gary Grall had a concrete flat work business they called SS & E, (Saturdays, Sundays & Evenings), and Bernie and Gary farmed together in the town of Cato.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, past member of the Whitelaw Volunteer Fire Dept. and he enjoyed farming, tractor pulling and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife: Lois of Cato; five children: Laura (Steve) Driscoll of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Terry Wallander of Manitowoc, and his fiancee: Chris Lietz; Philip (Shelley) Wallander of New Richmond; Todd (Kay) Wallander of Whitelaw; Scott Wallander of Manitowoc; eight grandchildren: Kelly and Ryan Driscoll of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Brittany and Derrick Wallander of Manitowoc; Justin and Shianne Wallander of New Richmond; Nicole and Andrew Wallander of Whitelaw; two stepgrandchildren: Landon and Cassie Grimm of Manitowoc; four brothers and five sisters-in-law: Robert (Elaine) Wallander of Whitelaw; Edward (Lucille) Wallander Jr. of Manitowoc; Tom (Pam) Wallander of Springfield, Mo.; Allan (Sue) Wallander of Saugus, Calif.; Pauline Wallander of Clarks Mills; three sisters: Marie Johanek of Manitowoc; Rita McKiel of La Porte, Ind.; Laura Braun of Manitowoc; seven brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law: Daniel (Patricia) Neuser of Manitowoc; Elaine Handl of Manitowoc; Arthur (Patsy) Burkart of Sheboygan; Joe (Sandra) Neuser of Green Bay; John (Sandra) Neuser of Manitowoc; Robert Neuser of Manitowoc; Thomas (Susan) Neuser of San Dimas, Calif.; Gene Johnson of Cary, Ill.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Michael and an infant brother: Daniel; one sister: Doris Schuh; six brothers-in-law: Hal Schuh; Joseph Johanek; Charles McKiel; Tony Braun; Clifford Handl; Gary Kaminski; two sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Johnson and Caroline Pedro; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Edmund (Alice) Neuser.
Relatives and friends may call at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Kellnersville on Monday, June 21, 2004 from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. A special thank you to the 3rd floor, CCU, Dr. Baatz, Dr. Bhatt, nurses and staff of Holy Family Memorial Medical Center for their special care and concern shown to Bernie during his last week.
