Dr. A. L. Atwood, long-time physician in Birmingham, dies

Dr. Abner L. Atwood Birmingham physician, 102 Edgewood Blvd., died at a local hospital early today.

A native of Mount Hope, Dr. Atwood was educated in the schools there and at the Nashville Medical College.

Dr. Atwood interned at the Lying-In Hospital, New Your City, and St. Mary's at Hoboken. He took his urological training at New York Post Graduate Hospital, Bellvue, and Columbia University.

A PRACTICING physician here 45 years, he was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, State Medical Assn., Southern Medical Assn. and the American Medical Assn.

He was a member of the Southeastern branch of the American Urological Assn. and Birmingham Urological Society.

A staff member of Hillman hospital 25 years, Dr. Atwood also was on the staff of South Highlands Infirmary and on courtesy staff of the Baptist Hospital, Carraway Methodist and East End Memorial Hospital.

He held life membership in the American Urological Assn., Jefferson County Medical Society, the Scottish Rite, Knights Templar, Royal Arch Masons Council, BPO Elks No. 79, the First Methodist Church, and the Birmingham Country Club.

SURVIVING, ARE his wife, Mrs. Verna Scott Atwood; a son, J L Atwood, Birmingham; a sister, Mrs. Naomi G. Wimberly, Russellville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Ridout's Valley Chapel at 3 p.m. tomorrow,

Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. W. C. Parsons, Dr. Farrar McCrummen, Dr. A. R. Green, N. R. Downing, Lee Davenport and Joe McKinstry.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jefferson County Medical Society.
