Jessie Ellen Paterson was born on November 12, 1920 in Granite City, Madison County, Illinois to John J. and Jessie Cecelia, (Mahoney), Paterson Sr.
Jessie never married, but she was a wonderful aunt to her nephews & niece, John (Jack), Mary, and Charles her brother's children. They all live in North Carolina and only Jack saw her regularly until his death in 2008.
Jessie Ellen's adopted family on her mother's side (Georgia Ellen (Mahoney), Kramer always had Jessie Ellen and her mother Jessie over for the holidays and any family gatherings. After her mom and my grandmother (Georgia Ellen, (Mahoney), Kramer passed away, this only left her extended family from her first cousin Mary Delores (Kramer) Taff. My mom carried on the tradition of having Jessie Ellen over for any event. On my mom's passing my brother David Richard Taff and myself (Joyce Ann Taff) continued with the same traditions.
Jessie Ellen was a bookkeeper for an insurance company in downtown St. Louis, Saint Louis City, Missouri and worked there until retirement.
She loved to go to the boats and gamble, play cards, crossword puzzles, and beat her second cousins at any board game.
She lived in the Parkview Senior Apartments in Granite City, Madison County, Illinois, where she made many long time friends. It was always a comfort to me to know they all looked out for each other.
In 2008 she was told she had colon cancer, she took it like a trooper and had the surgery. They did not get all the cancer cells and in 2012 it moved to her liver as well as the colon. She was on pills for two months to slow down the cancer, but in January 2013 she was told they were not helping, so there was nothing else to do.
I had the privilege of being her caregiver from 2008 to her death in 2013, she never thought of herself, just how she was messing up your day.
She died on March 8, 2013 at Granite City Nursing & Rehab Center in Granite City, Madison County, Illinois from colon & liver cancer.
She was buried from Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City, Madison County, Illinois and is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois next to her parents John J. & Jessie Cecelia and sister Mary Joyce Paterson.
